Recruiters reject the majority of resumes within seconds. Often, it's not because candidates aren't qualified — it's because of preventable mistakes. Here are the most common ones.

1. Typos and Grammatical Errors

Nothing screams "I don't pay attention to detail" like a misspelled word on your resume. Always proofread twice.

2. Using an Unprofessional Email

partyking2003@yahoo.com won't impress anyone. Create a simple firstname.lastname@gmail.com address.

3. Including Irrelevant Information

Your resume isn't a biography. Every line should support your candidacy for the specific role. Remove unrelated hobbies, outdated skills, and high school achievements (if you're a college graduate).

4. Writing Paragraphs Instead of Bullet Points

Recruiters scan, they don't read novels. Use concise bullet points starting with action verbs.

5. Being Vague

"Responsible for managing projects" tells recruiters nothing. Instead: "Managed 5 concurrent projects with $2M budget, delivering all on time."

6. Poor Formatting

Inconsistent fonts, cramped margins, and walls of text make your resume hard to read. Use a professional template with consistent formatting.

7. Including a Photo (in the US)

In the United States, photos on resumes can lead to unconscious bias and are generally discouraged. Skip the headshot.

8. Listing Every Job You've Ever Had

If you have 15+ years of experience, focus on the last 10-15 years. Early career roles from decades ago add little value.

9. Using Passive Language

"Was responsible for..." is weak. "Led," "Built," "Increased," "Delivered" — active verbs show ownership.

10. Not Including Keywords

If the job requires "Python" and "machine learning," those words need to appear in your resume for ATS to flag you as a match.

11. Making It Too Long

One page for under 10 years of experience. Two pages maximum for senior roles. Never three.

12. Forgetting to Update Regularly

An outdated resume with your last job from 2023 signals you're not actively job searching or organized.
